Do I need to train my dog to use the ladder?Updated 2 months ago

Yes, most dogs will require some training until they get used to using the WAG Dog Ladder independently.

It is highly recommended that you train your dog where you can stand or float to the side as your dog gets used to the WAG Dog Ladder. Some dogs may try to wrap their legs around the ladder like a tree trunk or reach up, sticking their front legs between the steps, and try to pull themselves up (like doing a pull-up). This can be dangerous and cause injury to the dog.

There should always be enough steps submerged in the water so the dog can swim up to the ladder and plant all 4 feet on the ladder. We generally recommend the following:

  • 2 steps submerged for small dogs,
  • 3 steps submerged for medium dogs,
  • 4 steps submerged for large dogs.
  • NOTE: The Dock Dog Ladder should never have fewer than 3 steps submerged (4 is ideal)

Having your dog approach them straight on and "spotting" them to keep their legs under their chest (like they do stairs at home) will get them comfortable with this new thing they have never seen before. Once they are used to it, they will learn to come in from the side and do it with large objects in their mouth.

The steps can be pivoted completely out of the water or removed when not needed, but make sure they are in place whenever the dog may enter the water. Periodically check for damage to equipment and replace as needed. Remember, WAG Dog Ladders are for dog use only.
